Vancouver’s Liron Gertsman achieved a long-desired goal by winning the prestigious title of Bird Photographer of the Year for a remarkable photo he captured in 2024 off the Mexican coast during a total solar eclipse. Gertsman’s passion for bird photography traces back to his childhood when he started with a basic camera at the age of five.

Combining his interests in bird photography and astronomy, Gertsman envisioned a unique shot of a bird in front of a total solar eclipse. After meticulous planning, he positioned himself near seabird colonies off the coast of Mazatlán during the eclipse to capture the perfect image.

Despite the challenges of photographing from a boat in motion, Gertsman’s dedication and preparation paid off as he successfully captured the iconic moment of frigate birds flying against the backdrop of the eclipse. His winning photograph, titled “The Frigatebird and the Diamond Ring,” highlights his exceptional talent and creativity in wildlife photography.

In addition to the prestigious title, Gertsman received a cash prize and recognition for his outstanding work showcasing the beauty of nature. He emphasizes the importance of using photography to raise awareness about conservation and the vital role birds play in ecosystems. Gertsman’s achievement not only celebrates his talent but also promotes a deeper appreciation for wildlife and the environment.
