“Whistle Bend Residents Call for Infrastructure Upgrades”

Share

Whistle Bend, the swiftest-growing neighborhood in Whitehorse, is now home to over 4,300 residents. The continuous construction activities in the area, with numerous unfinished homes and the noise of bulldozers, are hard to miss. The neighborhood boasts a diverse community, uniting individuals from various income levels and backgrounds, including young families and newcomers to the country.

With the ongoing territorial election campaign and the addition of two new ridings in Whistle Bend, residents are advocating for more than just housing developments. They are calling for enhanced transportation infrastructure and increased local amenities and services to cater to the expanding population.

The rapid growth of Whistle Bend has prompted the inclusion of two MLAs in the territory’s legislative assembly, representing Whistle Bend South and Whistle Bend North for the first time. The surge in population has strained the community, as indicated by resident Eoin Sheridan, who highlighted the lack of local businesses and essential services.

While the neighborhood houses the largest long-term care facility in the territory and a recently opened elementary school, residents like Sheridan emphasize the necessity of basic services for community livability, such as grocery stores and recreational facilities. Connectivity for active transportation is another concern, with Sheridan pointing out the inadequate cycling routes and the need for safer roads.

Mountain View Drive, the primary route between Whistle Bend and downtown Whitehorse, often experiences traffic congestion. Residents are calling for road improvements to ensure safer cycling conditions and alleviate traffic issues. The recent opening of Yukon Mart, the sole local business in the area, underscores the community’s need for more self-sufficiency and services.

Proposals from political parties aim to collaborate with the City of Whitehorse to attract businesses to Whistle Bend and facilitate their establishment. The Yukon Party plans to widen Mountain View Drive and support the city in planning a second bridge across the Yukon River to accommodate future development. The Liberals prioritize improving active transportation routes, while the NDP also focuses on enhancing public transit and exploring innovative solutions for congestion issues.

In conclusion, residents seek a more self-sustaining and accessible community in Whistle Bend, with a focus on essential services, improved infrastructure, and sustainable transportation options.
