Share

A high school football player in Winnipeg is currently in intensive care after sustaining a severe neck injury during the opening kickoff of a game on Friday. Darius Hartshorne, a student at Sisler High School and a member of the Sisler Spartans team, was injured during the first play of a match against the Tec Voc Hornets on October 17.

Commissioner Jeffrey Bannon of the Winnipeg High School Football League expressed shock over the injury and subsequent surgery, which he described as potentially life-changing for the Grade 12 student. Bannon mentioned that Darius is in the intensive care unit and has started breathing on his own, but the full extent of his recovery and future prospects are still uncertain.

Matt Henderson, superintendent of the Winnipeg One School Division, explained that Hartshorne was injured while receiving the opening kickoff and being tackled during the game. Henderson emphasized the rarity of such injuries and praised the coaching standards in the Winnipeg School Division for teaching proper tackling techniques.

The injured player also volunteered with the North Winnipeg Nomads, as noted by Stephanie Cameron-Ciaralli, who is caring for him. Head coach Sean Esselmont described Hartshorne as one of the most respectful and kind young men he has coached.

Following the injury, staff and students at Sisler High School were informed, and support services like psychologists and social workers were made available. Tec Voc players were also notified about the incident. A fundraising page has been established to aid Hartshorne’s family, who may need to make home modifications due to the injury.
