Two key witnesses who spoke with Nykera Brown shortly before she was fatally shot provided testimony during the trial of the man accused of her murder, which occurred three years ago. Nykera’s brother testified at the Saskatoon Court of King’s Bench trial of Andrew Rosenfeldt, who faces a second-degree murder charge in connection with Nykera’s death on November 15, 2022. Nykera and Rosenfeldt were in a relationship at the time of the tragic incident.
During the second week of the trial, Dregan Brown, Nykera’s brother, recounted a three-minute phone call with his sister just before her death, in which she expressed a desire to seek refuge at his apartment due to feeling unsafe with Rosenfeldt. Dregan mentioned that Nykera appeared distressed and was arguing with Rosenfeldt during their conversation. When asked by Crown prosecutor Elizabeth Addabor about Nykera’s reason for wanting to stay with him, Dregan emphasized her concern for her safety and the need for a secure place to stay.
In a twist during cross-examination, defense attorney Chris Murphy inquired about Nykera’s mental health history and alleged suicide attempts, suggesting that Nykera had hinted at suicidal thoughts on the night of her death. Dregan refuted this claim, asserting that Nykera had not mentioned anything about harming herself that evening and expressed absolute certainty that Rosenfeldt was responsible for her tragic demise.
Witnesses revealed that both Nykera and Rosenfeldt were affiliated with the Terror Squad street gang. Testimonies from protected individuals, including a friend of Nykera’s who testified earlier, shed light on the events leading up to Nykera’s death. The group, including Nykera and her friends, had been consuming alcohol and drugs before embarking on a gang-related mission known as a “lick” to reclaim stolen property. However, Nykera decided to return to the apartment before completing the mission, leaving her friends behind.
The friend testified that Nykera never returned to the group after leaving, indicating a sudden disappearance. Although loose bullets were observed on a table in the apartment that night, there was no sighting of a firearm. Nykera’s mother disclosed in an interview that her daughter had struggled with addiction and gang involvement but had recently shown a commitment to sobriety and leaving the gang behind. The friend revealed that Nykera had expressed a desire to get clean so she could reunite with her son, portraying a sense of contentment on the night of her tragic death.
