Conservative Leader Commends PM’s Speech, Criticizes Carney

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre has commended the prime minister’s recent speech in Davos, Switzerland, describing it as “well-crafted and eloquently delivered.” However, in a lengthy six-page statement released on Thursday, Poilievre criticized Mark Carney’s efforts in reducing Canada’s reliance on the United States.

Poilievre acknowledged Carney’s call for Canada to become more self-reliant, less dependent, and collaborate with like-minded nations. He expressed the Conservatives’ willingness to work with the prime minister to translate these intentions into tangible outcomes.

While Poilievre’s response signaled a shift in his usual tone characterized by sharp rhetoric towards adversaries, he did not hold back from criticizing the Liberals. He highlighted the disparity between their promises and the actual economic outcomes, stating that despite their grand speeches, the Liberals have increased the country’s economic costs and dependence.

Carney’s speech at Davos has garnered international acclaim for his candid assessment of the global order and his advocacy for middle powers to unite against larger powers who weaponize economic integration. Although Carney did not explicitly mention the United States, his implications were clear, prompting a retort from U.S. President Donald Trump asserting Canada’s reliance on the U.S.

Poilievre has expressed skepticism towards the World Economic Forum, vowing to prohibit Conservative government ministers from attending, alleging that the Liberals use the forum to promote their progressive agenda, a stance that contrasts with the Liberals’ response to Carney’s well-received speech.

In his response, Poilievre acknowledged the significance of Canada’s relationship with the U.S., emphasizing the need for trade diversification while underscoring the enduring nature of Canada’s security and trade ties with its southern neighbor. He reiterated the Conservative Party’s readiness to assist the government in addressing U.S. tariffs.

Additionally, Poilievre cautioned against forging closer ties with “hostile” nations like China, citing concerns over the recent trade deal negotiated by Carney with China. He emphasized the importance of upholding Canadian values and national security in international relations.

When the House of Commons reconvenes, Poilievre plans to introduce the Sovereignty Act, aimed at enhancing Canada’s affordability, self-reliance, and sovereignty. The act includes proposals to eliminate capital gains tax on reinvestment in Canada and repeal anti-pipeline legislation to expedite pipeline approvals.

Poilievre also advocated for addressing the recruiting crisis in the Canadian Armed Forces, proposing initiatives to strengthen Canada’s military presence in the Arctic, bolster the Canadian Rangers, and accelerate upgrades to submarines, helicopters, and Northern support facilities.

Overall, Poilievre’s response to Carney’s speech reflects a mix of praise, criticism, and proposals aimed at advancing Canada’s economic independence, national security, and sovereignty.
