Three scientists, Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann, and Georg Nagel, were awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their contributions to light-gated ion channels and optogenetics, as announced by the award committee in Stockholm on Monday. Optogenetics enables the manipulation of individual nerve cell activity within a living brain, unlocking new insights into neuroscience worldwide.

The Nobel laureates, Deisseroth from the U.S., Hegemann and Nagel from Germany, expressed their mutual appreciation for sharing the prestigious prize and emphasized their camaraderie. The prize, totaling 12 million Swedish crowns, will be divided among the trio. Deisseroth works at Stanford University, Hegemann at Humboldt University, and Nagel at the University of Würzburg.

According to Anna Wedell, a Nobel committee member, optogenetics marks the beginning of a transformative era in neuroscience, allowing researchers to delve into the intricate workings of the brain and neuronal interactions on a profound level.

In ongoing clinical trials, optogenetics shows promise in restoring vision for individuals afflicted with retinitis pigmentosa by introducing light-sensitive proteins into the retina. Furthermore, researchers anticipate advancements in cochlear implants through optogenetics, enhancing the precision of auditory nerve stimulation beyond current methods.

The evolution of optogenetics traces back to the early 1990s when Hegemann’s research on Chlamydomonas algae’s light response led to the discovery of channelrhodopsin-2, an ion channel activated by light. This breakthrough paved the way for Deisseroth’s demonstration of optogenetics in rat nerve cells in 2005, propelling the methodology into the scientific forefront.

The Nobel Prizes in chemistry and physics are scheduled for the following days, with literature and peace prizes to be awarded later in the week. The Nobel Prize, originating from Alfred Nobel’s will, aims to recognize individuals who have made significant contributions for the betterment of humanity. Nobel, renowned for inventing dynamite, established the prizes to honor achievements across various fields close to his heart.

The Nobel laureates will receive their awards on December 10, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death, in accordance with the longstanding tradition of the prestigious accolade.
