Annual winter clothing drives are commencing once again in Prince Edward Island, with organizers facing the challenge of securing an adequate supply of clothing for distribution. Sandra Gallagher, a longstanding participant in the Coats for Kids initiative for over a decade, noted a decrease in donations this year despite extensive promotional efforts.
“We’ve made a concerted effort to raise awareness about Coats for Kids through various channels such as flyers, local radio stations, churches, schools, and daycares,” stated Gallagher during an interview with CBC News. The campaign in Charlottetown has recently distributed clothing, while the Summerside organizers are actively collecting donations for a weekend distribution.
Gallagher emphasized the ongoing need for additional items due to the high demand for winter clothing this season. “Some individuals are facing hardships. Hearing stories of individuals having to choose between essential expenses like gas for work or groceries over purchasing winter clothing for their children is truly impactful,” she shared.
The Coats for Kids initiative is scheduled to hold another event at Credit Union Place in Summerside this Saturday. Further details can be found on the group’s Facebook page. In a parallel effort, a student group from Holland College in Charlottetown has launched its winter clothing drive this month, initially facing concerns about donation shortages until a recent surge of support.
Ashley Sheppard, a member of the Holland College Student Association, expressed relief after receiving a substantial donation of about 40 bags of items. She highlighted the significant impact these donations will have on students, particularly international students unfamiliar with P.E.I.’s winter conditions.
“It’s a significant financial burden lifted off their shoulders. Winter jackets can cost $60 to $100, funds that could otherwise be allocated for groceries and educational supplies,” noted Sheppard. The student group aims to gather more donations leading up to their main event on Nov. 18, with drop-off locations available at the Holland College student association’s office within the Charlottetown Centre.
