The current Olympic season in alpine skiing is full of thrilling moments.

One of the major highlights is the remarkable comeback of American athlete Lindsey Vonn, aged 41. Vonn, a four-time World Cup overall champion, had to step away from the sport due to injuries in 2019, holding a record of 82 career victories on the women’s circuit at that time. Following a return last season with a new titanium knee, Vonn achieved a silver medal in her final race, becoming the oldest woman ever to reach the alpine World Cup podium. Now, after over a year back in the game, Vonn is a top contender for a gold medal in her sixth Olympics. She has secured a medal in all five women’s downhill races this season, including two golds, and has stood on the podium in seven out of eight races overall.

Another impressive comeback story is that of Mikaela Shiffrin from the U.S., a five-time overall champion. Shiffrin broke Vonn’s record for most wins in the World Cup women’s category in 2023. Despite a setback last year due to a puncture wound that cost her a ninth slalom Crystal Globe, Shiffrin has bounced back, winning six out of seven slalom races this season and earning a silver in the remaining one.

Additionally, the return of Federica Brignone from Italy, the reigning women’s overall champion, has been well-timed. Brignone finished in sixth place in her first race since a leg injury last April, setting her up to compete in the upcoming home Olympics.

On the men’s side, Marco Odermatt from Switzerland continues to impress. With seven victories in 15 races this season, he is leading significantly in the race for his fifth consecutive overall title. Odermatt is also on course for his third consecutive Crystal Globes in downhill, super-G, and giant slalom.

Unfortunately, Canadian ski racers have had a challenging season, securing only one medal — a bronze by Val Grenier in the women’s giant slalom at Mont-Tremblant, Quebec, last month. The top Canadian Olympic hopefuls, Jack Crawford and Cam Alexander, have not shown podium-level performances.
