Share

The Ontario Minor Hockey Association (OMHA) is currently investigating an altercation involving coaching staff during a U13 game in Lakeshore, Ontario, that took place on Sunday. The incident occurred during a match between the Riverside Rangers and Belle River Canadiens. The OMHA has taken swift action by suspending all bench staff members from both teams indefinitely pending a hearing.

In response to the incident, the OMHA stated that such situations have no place in minor hockey and do not align with the organization’s values. A video posted on LiveBarn, an ice rink streaming service, shows coaching staff gathering near one of the benches after the game, leading to a physical altercation with punches thrown in the presence of players.

The Belle River Canadiens expressed deep disappointment in a Facebook post, emphasizing that the actions captured in the video do not represent the values or expectations of the Belle River District Minor Hockey community. Similarly, Riverside Minor Hockey Association President Anne Marie Schofield refrained from commenting further, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation.

Lakeshore Mayor Tracey Bailey conveyed personal disappointment and emphasized the importance of maintaining a high standard of behavior, especially among adults who serve as role models for young athletes. Bailey indicated that a reminder about facility code of conduct will be shared with user groups in response to the incident.

Bailey acknowledged that such incidents are not typical in minor hockey and expressed hope that the positive efforts of those involved in Lakeshore youth sports will not be overshadowed by this event. The game ended with the Riverside Rangers securing a 6-5 victory.
