An Ontario man faced animal cruelty charges in a Las Vegas court for taking a flamingo named Peachy from its habitat at a well-known hotel in what was described as a drunken and malicious act. Mitchell Fairbarn, the defendant, was convicted on felony and misdemeanor counts of animal cruelty after a trial that started recently. Fairbarn, a contractor from rural Ontario, admitted to drinking “30 to 40” beers during his Las Vegas visit for a construction expo.
The incident occurred around 5 a.m. on March 3 at the Flamingo Las Vegas Hotel and Casino, where Fairbarn took the bird, thinking it was a humorous prank. Witnesses testified that Fairbarn was seen holding the flamingo in an elevator and later in his hotel room. The bird was found shaking and bleeding, with injuries including missing feathers and signs of trauma.
Fairbarn’s defense lawyer argued that his client’s actions were a result of being intoxicated and not intended to cause harm. Despite the regret expressed by Fairbarn, the prosecution emphasized the physical pain caused to the bird during the incident.
Peachy, the 27-year-old flamingo, required medical treatment following the incident but has since recovered. The hotel expressed gratitude for the attention given to the matter and reaffirmed their commitment to the well-being of the animals in their wildlife habitat.
Animal rights advocates viewed the verdict as a step towards justice for Peachy, highlighting the importance of protecting animals from cruelty. The case is one of several recent instances of animal abuse at Las Vegas casinos, underscoring the need for stricter enforcement of animal welfare laws in the region.
