“Trump Ends Canada Trade Talks over Reagan Ad”

Share

U.S. President Donald Trump has announced the termination of trade discussions with Canada due to an advertisement by the Ontario government featuring former U.S. President Ronald Reagan’s words on tariffs. This development marks a new challenge in the ongoing trade negotiations between the two nations, with Ontario Premier Doug Ford adopting a more confrontational approach compared to federal counterparts.

The decision by Trump to end talks came as a surprise to the Carney government, according to insider sources. Trump’s reaction to the ad appears to be genuine rather than a strategic maneuver in negotiations.

The sequence of events leading up to this point includes the launch of a $75 million ad campaign by the Ontario government, featuring Reagan’s views on tariffs. Despite the original address discussing specific tariffs on Japan, the ad focused on Reagan’s broader stance against tariffs triggering trade wars and economic downturns.

Following the airing of the ad during the Major League Baseball playoffs, reports emerged that Canada and the U.S. were nearing a deal to alleviate sectoral tariffs on items like Canadian steel and aluminum. However, Trump’s direct response to the ad shifted the tone of negotiations, prompting Ontario to pause the campaign to allow for a potential resumption of trade talks.

Both Carney and Trump are set to attend international summits, with Trump expressing strong disapproval of the ad’s messaging and accusing Canada of deception. Carney emphasized the constructive nature of negotiations and Canada’s willingness to engage in discussions when the U.S. is ready.

In response to the backlash, Ford announced the temporary halt of the ad campaign to facilitate the continuation of trade discussions. The ad, which aimed to reach American audiences, will still run during the initial World Series games between the Toronto Blue Jays and Los Angeles Dodgers.
