The Canadian ice hockey drama “Heated Rivalry” has been honored with the prestigious Peabody Award. The series, produced by Crave and Bell Media and distributed by HBO Max in the United States, achieved unexpected success upon its release in November 2025. It was recently recognized as one of the 11 outstanding television shows in the entertainment category.
According to the Peabody Awards jurors, “Heated Rivalry” skillfully navigates complex themes of sexuality and emotional intimacy, inspiring viewers and advocating for positive masculinity, thus making a significant cultural impact on television this year. The show, helmed by Montreal filmmaker Jacob Tierney and adapted from novels by Halifax writer Rachel Reid, delves into a clandestine gay relationship between fictional professional hockey players Shane Hollander (portrayed by Hudson Williams) and Ilya Rozanov (played by Connor Storrie).
Tierney, alongside the official Instagram account of the show, expressed gratitude for the award, emphasizing the intricate storytelling and the importance of portraying the narrative authentically. Reid also shared her pride in the production team’s achievement, accompanied by a joyful emoji. The Directors Guild of Canada in Ontario extended their congratulations on Instagram, lauding their members who contributed to the series.
The recipients of the 86th Annual Peabody Awards will be celebrated at a ceremony in Los Angeles on May 31st.
