The mastermind behind the acclaimed animated movie “KPop Demon Hunters” has been honored with the key to the city of Toronto, her hometown. Maggie Kang, a Korean-Canadian filmmaker, was surprised on stage by Mayor Olivia Chow during a panel discussion at Departure Festival celebrating the film’s success.
Mayor Chow commended Kang’s achievements and highlighted how her journey would serve as an inspiration for future generations. Kang, visibly moved by the recognition, accepted the key and later posed for photographs alongside Mayor Chow and Cindy Gouveia, the president of Sheridan College, where she studied.
“KPop Demon Hunters” has emerged as the most-viewed film on Netflix since its debut, boasting a chart-topping soundtrack and the green light for a sequel. During the panel, Kang, who serves as the writer and co-director, hinted at the upcoming project, expressing her commitment to delivering another groundbreaking film that resonates with her vision.
In an upcoming event, Kang is set to receive the cultural innovator award at the Departure Honours gala, further cementing her impact on the entertainment industry.
