“Air Canada Halts U.S. Routes Over Jet Fuel Costs”

Share

Air Canada has announced the suspension of service on four seasonal routes to U.S. destinations due to the high cost of jet fuel. The affected routes and their last flight dates are as follows: Toronto to Sacramento on August 1, Vancouver to Raleigh on July 29, Toronto to Charleston on September 6, and Montreal to Austin on September 7. The airline plans to resume full service on these routes in the summer of 2027, offering affected passengers alternative travel options or refunds where applicable.

Global airlines have started reducing flights in response to the escalating conflict in Iran and the resulting oil blockade in the Strait of Hormuz, leading to a more than doubled increase in jet fuel prices. In a similar move, Air Canada recently suspended six domestic and cross-border routes deemed economically unviable. WestJet has also announced capacity cuts in April, May, and June by consolidating flights and adjusting seasonal service to various destinations.

The jet fuel shortage has prompted several airlines, including Air Canada, WestJet, Porter Airlines, and Air Transat, to raise fares or introduce surcharges to mitigate the rising costs.
