Billions worldwide are observing Diwali, a festival celebrated for over 2,500 years in India, symbolizing the victory of light over darkness and good over evil. Hindus, Jains, and Sikhs worldwide mark this five-day festival. On Prince Edward Island (P.E.I.), many Islanders are partaking in the festivities.

The Hindu Society of P.E.I. held a significant celebration at the Eastlink Centre in Charlottetown over the weekend, drawing a large crowd. Rekha Chaudhary, the society’s treasurer, expressed delight at the event’s success, noting the spiritual programs and musical performances that took place.

Chaudhary mentioned that her family took a break from work and school to celebrate Diwali together. Preparations included cleaning, decluttering, and decorating their home, followed by fireworks, socializing, and exchanging gifts, sweets, and dry fruits in the evening.

The recent event at the Eastlink Centre focused on women’s empowerment, with dance performances highlighting women’s strength and resilience. Chaudhary estimated that over 700 people attended, fostering a sense of unity among attendees from various communities.

Jay Patel, a member of the P.E.I. Titans, shared his experience at the celebration, likening it to a nostalgic journey back home with its vibrant atmosphere, diverse food stalls, and cultural performances. The P.E.I. Titans, established in 2022, aim not only to host Indian cultural festivals but also promote sports like cricket on the island.

Looking ahead, both the Hindu Society and the P.E.I. Titans are committed to strengthening community bonds beyond Diwali. The Hindu Society is in the process of constructing a new temple in Winsloe South to accommodate worship, meditation, and cultural activities, emphasizing instilling cultural values in children. The P.E.I. Titans are planning additional events, including charity fundraisers and food drives, to give back to the local community.

The dedication of these organizations to fostering community connections through cultural celebrations and sports reflects their ongoing commitment to enriching the community on P.E.I.
