“Canadian Centre For Ethics in Sport to Rebrand as Sport Integrity Canada”

The Canadian Centre For Ethics in Sport is set to rebrand as Sport Integrity Canada in January to better align with its expanded role, according to the organization’s board chair. Having served as the nation’s anti-doping agency for more than twenty years, the CCES also took on responsibilities related to sports betting integrity and safe sport practices following a directive from former federal sports minister Carla Qualtrough.

Starting April 1, the center assumed the oversight of handling complaints and investigations regarding abuse and misconduct in sports, as well as managing the public registry of individuals banned from sports or facing provisional sanctions. This transition followed the dissolution of the Office of the Sport Integrity Commissioner (OSIC).

In a recent statement, Jocelyn Downie, Chair of the organization’s board, highlighted the need for strategic planning and organizational reform to ensure Sport Integrity Canada is fully equipped to uphold its position as the leading authority on sports integrity within the country. The name change reflects the agency’s growth and transformation into an independent entity focused on sports integrity.

While Sport Integrity Canada oversees sports bodies that receive federal funding, it does not have jurisdiction over provincial, territorial, university, or club sports, leaving these entities vulnerable. To address this gap, Signy Arnason, the Executive Director of CCES Safe Sport, mentioned the possibility of expanding the center’s reach to include these levels of sports, contingent on securing additional funding.

The decision to shift responsibilities from OSIC to CCES was aimed at enhancing the independence of the process. Despite receiving financial support from the federal government, the CCES operates autonomously, with no governmental influence over board appointments. However, the organization is not subject to the Access to Information Act, limiting public access to its internal information.

The ongoing evolution of Sport Integrity Canada underscores its commitment to advancing integrity in Canadian sports while navigating challenges related to funding and jurisdictional boundaries.
