“Wabush Airport to Resume Flights After Temporary Suspension”

Share

Flights departing from Wabush Airport will recommence on Wednesday morning following a temporary suspension on Tuesday. The airport faced restrictions preventing the landing of flights with more than 19 seats due to inadequate firefighting services, a requirement imposed by a recent Transport Canada designation change.

Transport Canada had initially reduced firefighting services in 2020, resulting in a modification of the airport’s designation status. However, a recent update reinstated the need for firefighting and crash rescue services at Wabush Airport, which were not available, leading to the flight suspension.

Labrador MP Philip Earle confirmed that a resolution was reached by Tuesday evening to allow flights to resume the following day. This temporary designation change will position the airport one level below the original Transport Canada requirement, providing a window for the necessary assets to be arranged on-site within the next few weeks.

The flight halt had significant repercussions, particularly affecting individuals traveling for medical purposes. Amanda Harnum’s family, scheduled to fly for her daughter’s medical appointment in St. John’s, had to make alternative arrangements through PAL Airlines from Happy Valley-Goose Bay following the flight suspension.

Expressing concerns about the essential nature of the airport’s operations, Harnum emphasized the critical role the airport plays in serving the residents of Labrador West. MP Earle acknowledged the widespread community impact and the necessity of timely resolutions, with residents relying heavily on air services for various needs.

The swift response to the airport disruption highlighted the collaborative efforts of officials in addressing the situation promptly. The significance of air travel in remote regions like Wabush was underscored, emphasizing the essential role it plays in facilitating connectivity for residents.
