Dr. Marc-Antoine Pigeon was wrapping up a demanding overnight shift when he received news that paramedics were en route with an unresponsive newborn discovered at a bus shelter in Longueuil, Que., early Monday morning. The emergency physician at Charles-Le Moyne Hospital described a shift in atmosphere as the team prepared to receive the infant.

Dr. Camille Tétreault, just beginning her day shift, quickly joined the medical team of over 15 individuals as paramedics rushed the baby into the hospital. The newborn, still connected to the placenta and exposed to the cold, was found bare at around 6:30 a.m. ET.

Despite an hour of resuscitation efforts, the medical team made the difficult decision to cease. With no parents present, a moment of silence was observed to honor the unknown baby’s passing. This practice is something Tétreault implements to cope with challenging losses.

Later that morning, a 33-year-old woman was apprehended by the Service de police de l’agglomération de Longueuil (SPAL) in connection with the baby’s demise. Following her release, the woman received appropriate support and is under further care.

The investigation is ongoing, and charges have yet to be filed. Jacqueline Pierre, a spokesperson for the SPAL, noted uncertainty regarding potential charges against the woman. The woman in question had been observed at a warming center near the bus stop where the baby was found by the executive director of La Halte du coin, a nearby homeless shelter.

Expressing empathy for the baby’s mother, Dr. Pigeon highlighted the available resources and support systems for individuals in distress. He emphasized the importance of healthcare professionals, police, and firefighters offering aid without judgment.

Dr. Pigeon later shared his experience on social media to illustrate the daily challenges faced by doctors, particularly in light of recent legislation affecting their compensation and performance evaluations. The law, including provisions tying remuneration to collective performance metrics, has sparked criticism among healthcare professionals for its impact on patient care.
