Share

Thunder Bay locals keen on rejuvenating their cherished garments will have an opportunity this weekend to do so. The Thunder Bay Repair Café is organizing a special textile-focused pop-up event at Intercity Mall on Saturday, October 25. Volunteers will be present to assist in repairing clothing and textiles.

Volunteer Maureen Gustafson, who has been involved with the Repair Café for about a year, mentioned that this event will feature a series of workshops where attendees can bring in their beloved textile items for repair guidance from volunteers. Gustafson highlighted the educational aspect of the workshops, mentioning that participants not only get their items fixed but also acquire skills to mend things independently in the future through various sewing and mending sessions.

The workshops will cover visible mending, darning socks, button sewing, and crafting personalized sewing kits with all necessary materials provided. The sessions operate on a pay-what-you-can basis. Founder Nancy Saunders shared that the Repair Café was established in Thunder Bay in 2021, drawing inspiration from similar endeavors nationwide.

While typical Repair Café events encompass a variety of items like toasters and vacuum cleaners, this weekend’s focus will solely be on textiles due to the popularity of clothing repair in previous events. Gustafson emphasized the significance of mending, noting a trend towards visible mending and the value of giving textiles a new lease on life creatively and joyfully.

Saunders mentioned that the event aligns with Circular Economy Month, promoting waste reduction by extending the lifespan of items and diverting them from landfills. Personal connections to mending were also highlighted, with Gustafson sharing a heartfelt experience of repairing an item that belonged to her late father.

The Repair Café event not only fosters practical skills but also embodies a meaningful and sustainable approach to maintaining and treasuring personal belongings while contributing to environmental conservation efforts.
