“Russia’s Air Assault on Kyiv Claims Lives, Sparks Fires”

In a significant overnight air assault, Russia targeted the main building of the Ukrainian government in Kyiv, causing a fire that resulted in three fatalities, including an infant. Ukrainian officials confirmed the attack on Sunday, with Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko expressing concern over the damage inflicted on the government building. Witnesses reported seeing the top floor ablaze, emitting thick smoke in the Pecherskyi district.

According to Ukraine’s air force on Telegram, Russia deployed 805 drones and 13 missiles during the assault, with Ukrainian defense forces successfully intercepting 751 drones and four missiles. This marked the highest number of drones used by Russia against Ukraine since the full-scale invasion began in February 2022.

Timur Tkachenko, the head of Kyiv’s military administration, disclosed the tragic discovery of an infant’s body in the rubble of a damaged four-story apartment building in the Darnytskyi district. Additionally, a young woman lost her life in the same attack in the eastern part of the city. The assault caused fires across Kyiv, resulting in 18 injuries.

While Moscow has not officially commented on the attacks, both sides deny deliberately targeting civilians. However, the ongoing conflict has led to a significant loss of life since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine three and a half years ago.

Following the assault, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported an elderly woman’s death in a bomb shelter in the Darnytskyi district and noted that a pregnant woman was among the injured. Several residential buildings in different districts of Kyiv suffered structural damage, with fires breaking out in multiple locations.

Prime Minister Svyrydenko called for additional support and weapons to combat the escalating Russian attacks, emphasizing the irreplaceable loss of lives. She urged the international community to respond decisively to the hostile actions of the Russian forces.

In response to the attacks, Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Anita Anand, reiterated Canada’s support for Ukraine, pledging over $22 billion in military, humanitarian, and financial aid. Anand condemned the deliberate targeting of civilians by Russia, echoing Tkachenko’s statement on the intentional strikes on civilian infrastructure.

The assault extended beyond Kyiv, with reports of explosions in the central city of Kremenchuk, resulting in power outages and damage to a bridge over the Dnipro River. Furthermore, the southern city of Odesa experienced damage to civilian infrastructure and residential buildings, with fires erupting in several apartment blocks.

As tensions escalate, Poland activated its air defense systems to ensure airspace security in response to the heightened threat of air attacks in western Ukraine. This latest attack on Kyiv follows a similar mass assault two weeks earlier, further dimming hopes for peaceful negotiations amidst mounting international pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the conflict. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy remains open to dialogue with Putin to establish a peace agreement, while urging global leaders to impose severe sanctions on Russia to compel a resolution to the war.
