Apple announced price increases for its iPad and MacBook models due to rising costs of memory and storage chips driven by the AI industry’s data center expansion. The company stated that it had managed to absorb previous cost hikes but had to adjust prices now to reflect the current market conditions accurately.
Following the price adjustment, the MacBook Neo on Apple’s website saw a $150 increase, with the starting price now at $949. The Education model’s price also went up to $819 from $679. Additionally, Apple raised prices for its HomePod smart speakers and Apple TV set-top boxes, while iPhone prices remained unchanged.
Other retailers selling Apple products may follow suit with price adjustments based on Apple’s notifications to distributors. The ongoing trend of increasing component costs is attributed to artificial intelligence companies prioritizing orders for critical components, such as RAM, over consumer electronics. This shift in supply allocation has led to significant price hikes across various consumer products.
Experts noted that the current memory chip shortage is impacting various industries, including gaming consoles. Microsoft recently announced a significant price increase for Xbox consoles, while Valve launched its Steam Machine at a higher price due to the RAM shortage. PlayStation and Nintendo have also raised prices for their gaming consoles, citing increased component costs and other market factors.
The memory and storage shortage is expected to persist through 2027, according to Micron, a major memory manufacturer. Industry efforts to expand production capacity are underway, with the hope of stabilizing prices once supply meets demand. Retailers and consumers are advised to anticipate continued price pressures and potential product shortages in the near future.
