Sony’s decision to cease the production of physical discs for all new PlayStation games starting in 2028 has sparked backlash among gamers who fear losing ownership of their collections. The move towards digital distribution was announced by Sony’s communications director, Sid Shuman, in a blog post on the PlayStation website.
From January 2028 onwards, new PlayStation games will only be accessible through the online PlayStation Store, with retail copies available solely in digital formats. However, previously released and upcoming games with retail versions will still be obtainable on discs.
Sony’s decision to discontinue physical disc production aligns with the increasing consumer preference for digital media over physical discs. The company also revealed plans to shut down online stores for the PlayStation 3 and PS Vita in select markets this year, citing incompatibility with modern commerce systems.
In a notable development, the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto VI will launch with a download code instead of a disc in physical releases. Sony, known for co-developing the compact disc format, played a pivotal role in introducing CD-based video games in the 1990s through the first PlayStation console.
Digital sales have dominated the video game market, with Sony reporting 78% of full game unit sales as digital in the past year. Xbox’s digital sales share was even higher at 90%. Despite the shift, physical game sales remain significant, with Nintendo’s Switch games primarily sold on physical game cards.
According to industry analysts, the resurgence of physical media in other entertainment sectors like vinyl records is unlikely to be mirrored in gaming. The rise of disc-free modern consoles poses challenges for physical game sales. Gamers and developers expressed strong opposition to Sony’s decision, emphasizing the importance of physical games for preservation, ownership, and consumer choice.
Analysts predict an all-digital future for gaming, with Sony expected to release the PlayStation 6 console without a disc drive. The shift towards digital distribution is seen as a strategic move by Sony to cut costs, eliminate resale markets, and drive revenue through its digital storefront. Despite the convenience of digital downloads, some gamers and developers lament the potential loss of cultural and artistic artifacts associated with physical game copies.
