“Indigenous Entrepreneur Revives Traditions Through Tourism”

Share

Blaine Mirasty, a member of the Cree community from Flying Dust First Nation in Saskatchewan and residing in Edmonton, shared his journey of learning traditional hunting skills from his father at a young age. Setting snares, tracking animals, and preparing meals from harvested rabbits were integral parts of his upbringing. Embracing the Cree way of life, known as Miyo-pimatisiwin, meant finding balance across various aspects of existence and respecting nature and community.

Growing up, Blaine faced prejudice and discrimination, but his experiences studying abroad in Norway allowed him to proudly represent his Indigenous roots. Inspired by his heritage, he established Cree North Adventures in 2019, offering guests a unique cultural experience in a tipi setting infused with traditional Cree practices.

Through Cree North Adventures, Blaine aims to provide guests with an authentic Indigenous encounter while promoting cultural preservation and economic empowerment for Indigenous communities. As the landscape of Indigenous tourism evolves, there is a growing recognition of the importance of supporting Indigenous-owned businesses to foster economic sovereignty and cultural resilience.

Blaine’s journey reflects a broader shift towards reconciliation and empowerment of Indigenous peoples in Canada. With nearly 3,000 Indigenous tourism enterprises in the country, the impact of supporting these businesses goes beyond economic contributions, fostering cultural pride and self-determination within Indigenous communities.

Blaine’s work is not just about running a business; it’s a continuation of the teachings passed down by his father, emphasizing connection, reciprocity, and cultural preservation embedded in Miyo-pimatisiwin. As Indigenous tourism gains momentum, it serves as a platform for sharing stories, traditions, and creating meaningful connections that bridge cultural divides and celebrate Indigenous heritage.
