Giant Styrofoam-filled Tires Threaten Wildlife in B.C.

Share

Eleven massive industrial tires, each weighing approximately four tonnes and filled with Styrofoam, have been discovered near Campbell River, B.C., raising concerns for local wildlife. The Greenways Land Trust, a small non-profit organization in the area, is facing challenges in removing the tires due to financial and technical limitations.

Keely Dodds, the stewardship co-ordinator of the organization, mentioned that their activities heavily rely on grant funding, and beach cleanups are not their primary focus. The origins of the tires remain unknown, but Dodds speculates that they may have broken off from a large dock or barge during recent windstorms in the region. The Styrofoam within the tires, initially used for buoyancy, is now at risk of breaking down into smaller fragments that could be ingested by marine life, posing a threat to their well-being.

Furthermore, concerns have been raised about the potential leakage of harmful chemicals from the tires into the water, posing a danger to salmon in the area. Peter Ross, a senior scientist at the Raincoast Conservation Foundation, highlighted the release of a chemical compound called 6PPD-quinone from tires, which has been linked to significant coho salmon mortality during rainy periods.

Efforts to remove the tires from the beach have been complicated by their location in a challenging spot with limited access. Despite a previous cleanup operation that removed 430 kilograms of water-logged Styrofoam, the task of removing the industrial tires remains daunting. The Greenways Land Trust is exploring options, including the possibility of using helicopters for removal, although financial constraints pose a significant hurdle.

The local authority, the Strathcona Regional District, clarified that the foreshore falls under provincial jurisdiction. While provincial ministries are aware of the debris, local initiatives are underway to address the situation. The Raincoast Conservation Foundation scientist emphasized the importance of holding accountable those responsible for the environmental impact, urging action to address the issue promptly.
