Dongfeng, a prominent Chinese automaker, has revealed its new lineup of electric vehicles at Montreal’s Old Port as part of its strategic expansion into the Canadian market. The showcased EV models, the compact BOX 01 and the electric SUV Vigo, are currently undergoing the necessary certification process to meet Canadian motor vehicle safety and regulatory standards.
Julie Mazorra Fernández, the director of North World Industry, the appointed Canadian distributor for Dongfeng, highlighted that both models will be priced below $35,000, aiming to offer affordable options to Canadian consumers. The company plans to make these models available for purchase sometime next year.
Reduced tariffs have sparked increased interest in Chinese EVs following a recent agreement between the Canadian government and China. The revised tariff allows for the import of 49,000 Chinese EVs annually, with a special provision reserving half of the quota for vehicles priced under $35,000. Data from Global Affairs Canada indicates a successful debut of over 3,500 Chinese EVs in Canada in May, including models from renowned manufacturers like Tesla and Geely.
Dongfeng’s decision to launch in Quebec is strategic, as the province is considered a prime market for electric vehicles due to high consumer awareness and acceptance, along with cost-effective electricity rates. After establishing a presence in Quebec, Dongfeng plans to expand to British Columbia and Ontario, following a similar trend seen among other electric vehicle manufacturers.
Despite the modest sales projections in Canada, Chinese automakers view the country as a crucial gateway to the larger U.S. market. With Canada offering a similar automotive landscape to the U.S., industry experts believe it serves as a testing ground for Chinese car manufacturers eyeing future expansion into the United States, despite current regulatory challenges.
The entry of Chinese EVs has drawn mixed reactions from Canada’s domestic automakers, who express concerns about potential cybersecurity risks and competition. However, experts predict that the influx of lower-priced Chinese vehicles could drive North American automakers to enhance their competitiveness in pricing, ultimately benefiting consumers.
As Dongfeng’s EV models complete the certification process, more information on their availability for consumers will be disclosed.
