Amid the WestJet flight attendants’ picket lines on Sunday, a family from Waterloo realized they would not be flying back with the Canadian airline. Victoria Richardson, her spouse, and child were scheduled to depart from Calgary International Airport to return to the Region of Waterloo International Airport on Sunday afternoon. The family was aiming to be back home before the upcoming week but faced delays due to the strike situation.
The Richardsons were among numerous families and individuals impacted by the WestJet flight cancellations that morning. A total of 4,287 WestJet flight attendants initiated a strike after failed contract negotiations, leading to the axing of over 600 flights during a busy travel weekend.
The core issue in the labor dispute revolves around pay. The union contends that its members are not adequately compensated and are performing unpaid tasks, such as ground duties. WestJet disclosed their recent offer early on Sunday, including a 13% wage increase effective October 1 and a 2.5% increase annually until 2029, alongside a new duty pay premium and scheduling adjustments.
Alia Hussain, president of CUPE 8125, the union’s WestJet Component, emphasized that the offer shared by WestJet is just a part of the broader contract negotiations. The union’s bargaining team was back at the negotiating table with WestJet on Sunday morning.
The Richardson family attempted to contact WestJet immediately upon learning of the strike but faced challenges in reaching the airline. WestJet assured on its website that affected passengers would be refunded or accommodated. In their case, WestJet rescheduled their Sunday flight to Tuesday, prompting the family to opt for new tickets with Flair Airlines for Tuesday morning departure from Calgary.
Expressing uncertainty about the rescheduled flight, Richardson decided to secure alternative flights with Flair Airlines and later canceled the WestJet booking. Despite the inconvenience and extra costs incurred, she expressed support for the flight attendants’ cause.
Richardson acknowledged the inconvenience caused by the strike and sympathized with those facing difficulties in arranging accommodations and meals. Despite the additional expenses, the family prioritized securing a new flight home.
