Approximately 30 WestJet flight attendants staged a demonstration outside Halifax Stanfield International Airport in response to a nationwide strike initiated due to unsuccessful contract talks between the airline and the union. All WestJet flights scheduled to depart or arrive at the Halifax airport were canceled for the day, causing inconvenience to numerous passengers, including Ed and Ann Meehan from the UK, who were forced to sleep on the airport floor after their flight was repeatedly rescheduled and then canceled. The couple had to pay extra to book a flight with another airline, leading to a prolonged journey back home with an added layover in Iceland.
Expressing disappointment, Ed Meehan mentioned that the ordeal had negatively impacted their perception of Canada, and they do not intend to visit again. Other travelers like Ryan Callbeck, whose flight to Regina was canceled, faced similar challenges. Despite sympathy for the flight attendants, Callbeck expressed frustration at the lack of effective communication channels and the unexpected expenses incurred due to the trip disruptions.
A total of 4,287 WestJet flight attendants across Canada went on strike over concerns regarding compensation and working conditions. The union highlighted that its members are inadequately paid and are tasked with unpaid duties, such as pre-departure ground work. WestJet assured affected passengers that they would receive refunds or alternative arrangements as necessary.
Officials at Halifax Stanfield International Airport advised passengers with WestJet bookings in the next three days to verify their flight status online before heading to the airport. This strike has caused significant inconvenience and financial losses to travelers, with many expressing disappointment and frustration over the situation.
