Health P.E.I.’s Chief Executive Officer emphasized the ongoing challenges despite significant progress in recruiting additional healthcare personnel on the Island. Melanie Fraser highlighted the momentum in enhancing the overall healthcare system during Health P.E.I.’s annual general meeting. The organization’s budget has surpassed $1 billion and is projected to keep growing.
Across Canada, provinces are competing to attract a limited number of healthcare graduates. A recent study released by Health Canada in January revealed a national shortage of over 22,800 family physicians, with only about 1,300 new graduates annually. The study also indicated the demand for approximately 14,000 additional licensed practical nurses, 2,700 more nurse practitioners, and 28,000 extra registered nurses, based on data from 2022.
Fraser mentioned that Health P.E.I. has been successful in addressing staff shortages on the Island, describing the recruitment efforts as a competitive battle that they are winning. She expressed her gratitude to the dedicated healthcare professionals and staff who have shown courage, compassion, and unwavering commitment, especially during challenging times.
During the meeting, Fraser and Health Minister Mark McLane faced inquiries about the tangible progress being made. Morgan Oatway, a registered nurse at Prince County Hospital, noted a decrease in senior staffing levels in the intensive care unit, with recent graduates having to train new hires instead of experienced nurses. Oatway highlighted the ongoing struggle in her unit despite Health P.E.I.’s recruitment initiatives.
Fraser emphasized the need to intensify recruitment, retention, and training efforts to meet the growing demand for healthcare professionals. She noted the importance of stabilizing hospitals like Prince County Hospital to ensure the delivery of robust services and attract skilled nurses to work in critical care units. While progress may take time, Fraser acknowledged a sense of increasing stability within the organization.
Moving forward, Health P.E.I. plans to focus on connecting all Islanders with primary care services as part of its strategic goals. The organization remains committed to enhancing the healthcare system and ensuring a sustainable and resilient workforce in the years ahead.
