Diane Crump, the pioneering female jockey who broke barriers by riding professionally in horse races in 1969 and later becoming the first woman to race in the Kentucky Derby in 1970, has passed away at the age of 77. Crump, who was battling an aggressive form of brain cancer since October, succumbed to the illness in hospice care in Winchester, Virginia, according to her daughter, Della Payne.
Throughout her career, Crump achieved significant milestones, winning 228 races before retiring in 1998, just before turning 50. Her groundbreaking debut as a jockey faced challenges as she, along with other women, fought for jockey licenses while encountering resistance from male counterparts who boycotted races where women were riding.
Despite facing opposition, Crump’s determination prevailed, with her historic rides paving the way for future generations of female jockeys. Her memorable moments include her first race at Hialeah Park in Florida in 1969, where she faced obstacles but ultimately finished 10th aboard Bridle ‘n Bit.
In 1970, Crump made history once again by participating in the Kentucky Derby, showcasing her trailblazing spirit. Although her performance did not secure a top position, her courage and resilience left a lasting impact on the racing community. Churchill Downs’ president, Mike Anderson, praised Crump’s legacy, acknowledging her as a revered figure in horse racing history.
Following her retirement from racing, Crump transitioned to helping individuals in the horse industry and engaged in therapy work with her beloved Dachshund dogs, offering comfort to those in medical settings. Known for her unwavering determination and compassion, Crump’s legacy transcends the racetrack, embodying values of kindness and empathy.
In her final days, Crump’s unwavering spirit and commitment to helping others remained steadfast, reflecting her enduring legacy. She will be remembered for her pioneering achievements and indomitable spirit, with her ashes set to be interred alongside her parents in Prospect Hill Cemetery in Front Royal, Virginia.
