A recent power outage during the Nunavut election highlights the urgent need for infrastructure improvements in the region, according to an incoming Nunavut MLA. On election night, residents of Rankin Inlet experienced intermittent power outages due to generator issues at Quilliq Energy Corporation.
Annie Tattuinee, the newly elected MLA for Rankin Inlet South, emphasized the importance of enhancing infrastructure to support community growth, including the development of more housing and facilities. Tattuinee noted that historical infrastructure investments in Nunavut did not sufficiently account for future growth and development needs.
Cecile Nelvana Lyall, the MLA-elect for Netsilik, echoed the call for infrastructure upgrades, particularly in the power sector in her constituency’s communities. The Qulliq Energy Corporation’s proposal to construct a new power plant in Kugaaruk in 2024 aims to address the growing population and power demand in the area, as the existing plant from 1974 struggles with maintenance due to its age.
The incoming MLAs are set to convene in Iqaluit from November 5 onwards for orientation and the selection of the new assembly’s Speaker, premier, and ministers. The focus remains on bolstering infrastructure to support anticipated housing expansions and overall community development.
