A grand jury in Los Angeles County has officially charged Nick Reiner with murder, alleging that he laid in wait before attacking his parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner. The indictment was issued on July 20 and made public on Wednesday, with 32-year-old Nick Reiner pleading not guilty to the charges.
The victims, Rob Reiner, a renowned director and actor, and his wife, photographer and producer Michele Singer Reiner, were fatally stabbed in their Brentwood home on December 14. Nick Reiner was swiftly arrested and charged two days following the incident.
The grand jury’s decision marks a significant advancement towards the trial process, enabling prosecutors to bypass the preliminary hearing phase in California, where evidence is typically disclosed publicly. Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, “This was a profound betrayal by someone who was loved and trusted by the very people he is accused of killing.”
The indictment discloses limited additional information, maintaining the case’s veil of secrecy. However, the inclusion of the lying in wait accusation, among other factors, renders Reiner eligible for the death penalty, though the final decision on seeking it remains pending.
Numerous key aspects of the incident remain undisclosed to the public, including motives and leaks from either side of the case. The Los Angeles County chief medical examiner expressed a desire to release the autopsy reports publicly but has been restricted by a court order.
Simultaneously, Nick Reiner is pursuing funds from a trust established by his parents to aid in his defense, claiming that the trustees have unjustly withheld the money from him. The trust, valued at least $1.5 million US, was designated for Nick Reiner regardless of his parents’ status.
Amidst these legal proceedings, Nick Reiner aims to re-engage prominent defense attorney Alan Jackson, with a hearing scheduled for the upcoming week. The L.A. County Public Defender’s Office, representing Reiner, declined to comment on the indictment.
Rob Reiner, a respected figure in the entertainment industry, embarked on a successful career as an actor before transitioning to directing, leaving behind a legacy of iconic films.
