“Saskatchewan Company Drills for Natural Hydrogen”

A company in Saskatchewan is currently engaged in drilling for hydrogen, aiming to demonstrate the feasibility of extracting hydrogen from the earth on a commercial scale as an alternative to deriving it from fossil fuels.

Regina-based Max Power Mining has recently initiated drilling operations for its third well at the Lawson Complex, an underground rock formation in southern Saskatchewan. The company envisions establishing the world’s first large-scale commercial natural hydrogen system, introducing a novel primary energy source.

Chad Levesque, the president and director of the company, highlighted the significance of hydrogen as a crucial component in various industrial processes, including ammonia production, petroleum refining, and transitioning towards cleaner energy alternatives. Emphasizing the need for a more sustainable method of sourcing hydrogen, Levesque underscored the potential of naturally occurring hydrogen.

Hydrogen serves as a versatile gas that can be utilized as a fuel or for electricity generation through fuel cells, with water being the sole byproduct of its reaction with oxygen. Due to its minimal greenhouse gas emissions, hydrogen is considered a promising energy source for sectors that are challenging to decarbonize, such as transportation and steelmaking.

The predominant source of hydrogen currently available for sale is grey hydrogen, produced from fossil fuels without emission reduction measures, leading to significant carbon dioxide emissions. On the other hand, green hydrogen, produced through water electrolysis using renewable energy sources, offers lower emissions but is economically less competitive than grey hydrogen.

Natural hydrogen, also known as white hydrogen, presents a potentially greener alternative as it can be naturally released from underground deposits with relatively lower greenhouse gas emissions. Leveraging existing extraction techniques used for natural gas and helium, the extraction of natural hydrogen at the Lawson Complex is anticipated to be cost-effective.

The formation of natural hydrogen underground occurs through processes such as serpentinization, involving the reaction of oxygen with iron-rich rocks, and the radioactive decay of uranium and thorium. Although the discovery of natural hydrogen deposits is rare due to its volatile and reactive nature, recent findings in Canada, including Saskatchewan, northern Ontario, Quebec, and Nova Scotia, suggest a growing interest in exploring natural hydrogen resources.

While the challenges of extracting hydrogen from natural deposits persist, ongoing research and exploration efforts aim to determine the viability of natural hydrogen as a sustainable energy source. The potential of white hydrogen wells to significantly impact decarbonization efforts remains uncertain, underscoring the need for continued research and development in this field.
