Saskatoon has been chosen to host the prestigious Brier event in 2027, marking the 100th anniversary of the men’s curling championship. The festivities will commence on February 26, 2027, at SaskTel Centre, making it the seventh time Saskatoon has been selected as the host city for the Brier. Notably, Saskatoon previously hosted the Brier in 2004 for its 75th edition and in 2012.
The announcement of Saskatoon’s successful bid was made by Curling Canada at a local Montana’s BBQ & Bar, the primary sponsor of the Brier. Ticket sales for the event are anticipated to begin as early as March. Steve Turner, the Executive Director of CurlSask, expressed enthusiasm for hosting the centennial celebration in Saskatchewan, emphasizing the province’s deep-rooted connection to curling.
Saskatchewan, renowned for its fervent curling fan base, last hosted the national men’s championship in 2024 in Regina. The province has a rich history with the Brier, having claimed the title seven times. The last Saskatchewan team to secure victory at the Brier was in 1980, led by skip Rick Folk, along with Ron Mills, Tom Wilson, and Jim Wilson, who later clinched the world championship that same year.
Mayor Cynthia Block highlighted the opportunity to showcase Saskatoon and honor the province’s curling heritage during the upcoming Brier. She expressed her personal connection to the sport, reminiscing about her curling experiences in rural Saskatchewan. Block pledged to make the 2027 Brier the most thrilling edition yet.
The bidding process for hosting the Brier was spearheaded by Discover Saskatoon and Saskatoon Destination Marketing Hotels Inc. Notably, Discover Saskatoon secured funding approval from city councillors earlier this year to support its bid for hosting the event. The organization estimated significant economic benefits from hosting the Brier, projecting substantial business sales, tax revenue, and hotel bookings.
Following the successful bid, Discover Saskatoon is expected to provide a comprehensive report to the city council detailing participation numbers, economic impact, and event budget specifics. The inaugural Brier took place in Toronto in March 1927, with Nova Scotia emerging as the victor. The winner of the 2027 Brier will represent Canada at the 2027 World Men’s Curling Championship, adding another layer of excitement to the prestigious event.
