Bob Rae commenced his role as Canada’s ambassador to the United Nations in 2020 amidst a global lockdown due to the pandemic. Throughout his tenure, significant world events transpired, such as the Taliban’s control of Afghanistan, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Hamas attacks on Israel, and Israel’s subsequent actions in Gaza. Despite facing criticism, notably from former U.S. President Donald Trump, for its peacekeeping shortcomings, Rae also harbored his own reservations about the UN but remained supportive of its mission.

In an interview on his final day at the UN with As It Happens host Nil Kӧksal, Rae reflected on his bittersweet departure. He highlighted the personal connections and friendships he had forged with colleagues in Ottawa and the UN, expressing nostalgia and gratitude for those relationships. Rae acknowledged the challenges faced during his term but emphasized his belief in the dedication and impact of UN personnel.

Regarding the UN’s future, Rae rebutted claims of a grim outlook, citing the dedication of thousands of individuals working to improve global conditions despite daunting circumstances. He stressed the importance of proactive efforts to effect positive change rather than succumbing to despair. Rae recounted pivotal moments during his tenure, including the crises in Afghanistan, Ukraine, and Gaza, which underscored the gravity of his responsibilities.

When queried about his response to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s address at the UN that prompted diplomatic walkouts, Rae defended his decision to remain seated, advocating for active listening and dialogue as essential diplomatic tools. He emphasized the need for mutual recognition and dignity between Israel and Palestine to foster peace.

Reflecting on his UN ambassadorship, Rae highlighted the significance of his familial legacy in the role and acknowledged personal growth in listening skills and collaboration. He expressed pride in the contributions he had made during his tenure, affirming his belief in the importance of diplomacy and international cooperation.
