The County of Kings’ municipal council approved a 1.5 per cent deed transfer tax following a heated debate and a 6-4 vote. Mayor Dave Corkum, supporting the tax, condemned reported threats of violence against some council members. Kings County, being the final county in the province to adopt this tax, plans to utilize the revenue for constructing a new recreation facility, including a pool, and funding infrastructure projects such as sewer upgrades across various districts.
Advocates of the tax argue that it is a more favorable option compared to a general tax rate increase. While the tax would increase the cost of a $300,000 home by $4,500, proponents believe it is a more targeted approach as it solely affects homebuyers rather than all property owners.
Mayor Corkum acknowledged his initial opposition to the tax but changed his stance after reviewing the county’s finances. Council members who pivoted on their stance post-election were defended by Coun. Everett MacPherson, emphasizing the importance of informed decision-making.
