The defence team concluded its presentation in the Andrew Rosenfeldt murder trial on Thursday, as two police officers recounted their involvement in assisting a young woman experiencing a mental health crisis in September 2022. The individual in distress was identified as 20-year-old Nykera Brown, who initially contacted law enforcement around 8 p.m. on Sept. 8 seeking assistance due to suicidal thoughts. Subsequently, an officer transported her to Royal University Hospital.
Approximately two hours later, additional officers responded to a call at University Bridge, where they successfully intervened to rescue Brown, who was positioned on the bridge’s railing. Tragically, Brown succumbed to a fatal gunshot wound in the couple’s Avenue P South residence on Nov. 15, 2022. Andrew Rosenfeldt, now 28, is currently facing second-degree murder charges in a trial at Court of King’s Bench before Justice Heather Macmillan-Brown, with the defence suggesting the possibility of suicide.
During the trial proceedings, Const. David Clarke testified about the initial response to the suicide incident at 124 Avenue P South, detailing Brown’s admission of contemplating suicide and ceasing her prescribed medication intake, leading to violent and suicidal thoughts. Clarke subsequently conveyed Brown to Royal University Hospital for treatment.
In a separate testimony, Const. Cameron Graves described the event at University Bridge, where Brown was found standing on the concrete railing while clinging to a light standard. Following a coordinated effort by multiple officers, Graves successfully removed Brown from the railing, leading to her apprehension under a mental health warrant.
Notably, defence attorney Chris Murphy opted not to call Rosenfeldt as a witness during the trial. The case is set to progress with closing arguments scheduled on November 14 by both Murphy and Crown prosecutor Elizabeth Addabor.
