Alberta Health Services has mandated the closure of Butterfield Acres Petting Farm following the discovery of nine cases of avian influenza. Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) infections were identified in poultry, as confirmed in a recent announcement by AHS. Butterfield Acres has stated their collaboration with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and provincial health authorities to address the issue, attributing the outbreak to the ongoing wild bird migration season. The farm expressed hope for a swift resolution but acknowledged the potential impact on the upcoming Pumpkin Fest event scheduled for October 25 weekend, promising refunds for ticket holders if necessary.
Situated on Rocky Ridge Road N.W. in the city’s northwest, the farm initially closed voluntarily from October 13 to 17. However, a formal closure order was issued by AHS on October 17, mandating the continued closure until inspectors determine it safe for reopening. AHS emphasized that while HPAI mainly affects birds, there is a low risk of human infection through close contact with infected animals. Visitors who were at the farm between October 6 and October 12 are advised to monitor themselves for symptoms of avian flu, including pink eye, fever, fatigue, headache, nausea, and respiratory issues. Should any symptoms manifest, individuals are urged to self-isolate and contact Health Link at 811 for further guidance.
