“Trade Tensions Impact US Tourists in Canada”

Share

Late last year, a resident of Cleveland, Ohio named Dan Davis began organizing a motorcycle journey with companions for the upcoming summer, including a visit to Ontario. However, uncertainties arose following the initiation of tariffs on Canada by U.S. President Donald Trump earlier this year, which led to trade tensions and sparked concerns about the reception U.S. citizens might face in Canada.

Davis reflected on instances where Canadians expressed discontent towards the U.S., such as booing the national anthem at NHL hockey games in February and running billboard campaigns criticizing Trump’s tariffs in March. These events raised doubts about whether they would be welcomed in Canada, especially considering their Ohio license plates, indicating they were from a state Trump had won in the 2024 election.

The strained Canada-U.S. relations have resulted in a decline in cross-border tourism. Trips by Americans to Canada via car decreased by 10.7% in April and 8.4% in May compared to the previous year, with air travel also seeing a decrease. To counteract this trend, tourism associations are launching campaigns to reassure Americans that they will be warmly welcomed in Canada.

The majority of Canada’s tourists come from the U.S., contributing $15.3 billion to the Canadian economy last year. To address concerns and encourage American visitors, various regions and tourism operators have initiated campaigns emphasizing hospitality and warmth towards U.S. tourists, aiming to maintain the essential relationship between the two neighboring countries.

In response to lower summer bookings by Americans, businesses in Ontario and British Columbia are actively promoting tourism to Americans. Niagara Falls Tourism and Destination Ontario have launched campaigns inviting Americans to visit and enjoy the benefits of the low Canadian dollar. Similarly, bear viewing businesses in British Columbia are extending a warm welcome to American tourists through various promotional efforts, despite experiencing a decline in bookings from the U.S.

The tourism industry recognizes the importance of fostering positive relationships and maintaining a steady flow of American visitors, as their absence could have lasting repercussions on businesses that rely on cross-border tourism. Efforts are underway to address perceptions and ensure that American tourists feel welcomed and valued in Canada.
