Two brothers have admitted responsibility for the death of an 18-year-old during a basketball game at the Copperfield Community Centre in southeast Calgary. The elder brother pleaded guilty to manslaughter after negotiations between defense lawyer Andrea Urquhart and prosecutor Vicki Faulkner. The younger brother was previously found guilty of manslaughter, while both were initially charged with second-degree murder.
The incident took place on the evening of September 5, 2023, when the victim, Danillo Canales Glenn, was playing basketball with friends at the community center. The two assailants, aged 16 and 18, approached the group with their hoods up, leading to a confrontation. One of the brothers used bear spray, while the other brandished a knife, resulting in the fatal attack on Canales Glenn. The victim’s friends attempted to intervene and performed CPR while waiting for emergency services, but Canales Glenn succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.
The brothers were identified through witness statements, CCTV footage, and physical evidence left at the scene. The older brother, whose identity remains protected due to legal restrictions, will be sentenced in the coming year after reports and assessments are completed. The court will reconvene in December to schedule a sentencing hearing for the case.
