Cadmus Delorme is set to welcome new University of Regina graduates on Thursday as they celebrate their academic achievements and look ahead to their futures. This milestone occasion will mark his official induction as the university’s 10th chancellor.
To commemorate this significant moment, Delorme will don a unique beaded chancellor stole, symbolizing a deep personal connection. Inspired by the beaded stole worn by the late Murray Sinclair, this ceremonial sash aligns with traditions observed by other academic institutions. The chancellor’s stole is a decorative accessory worn alongside the chancellor’s robe, signifying their official position within the university.
“When I assumed the role of chancellor, I wanted to bring my authentic self as a First Nations man of Cree/Saulteaux descent,” Delorme expressed. Collaborating with the University of Regina team, the decision to incorporate the beaded stole was met with unanimous support.
In his capacity as chancellor, Delorme aims to represent not only the University of Regina but also the diverse community of over 90,000 current students, alumni, and future scholars. He emphasizes the importance of embracing one’s identity and hopes to set a precedent for cultural pride within academic settings.
When selecting a designer for the stole, Delorme turned to his close friend Thomas Benjoe, CEO of Flowing River Capital, whom he considers a brother. Benjoe, an experienced beader since childhood, infused the stole with significant personal elements from Delorme’s life journey, creating a truly meaningful piece.
The intricate beadwork tells a story, with floral motifs representing various aspects of Delorme’s life. From his family members to his academic pursuits, each detail carries deep symbolism. The inclusion of gold buttons symbolizing stars reflects ancestral connections and the guiding presence of past and future generations.
