Canada Post has officially finalized new collective agreements with the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW), as confirmed on Thursday. The union, representing 55,000 postal employees, disclosed on June 1 that its members overwhelmingly supported the agreement, marking the end of prolonged negotiations and strikes amid uncertainties about the future of the Crown corporation.

A Canada Post spokesperson stated on Thursday that the organization anticipates collaborating with its workers and bargaining agents to revitalize the business, instill confidence in the postal service, and enhance national service quality, now that the new agreements are in place.

The terms of the deal entail wage hikes of 6.5% in the initial year, 3% in the second year, and subsequent increases aligned with the annual inflation rate for years three to five. Additionally, the agreement introduces a weekend parcel delivery framework and enhanced benefits.

CUPW reported that approximately 86% of rural and suburban mail carriers and 89% of urban workers supported the deal. This agreement remains effective until January 31, 2029.

Canada Post emphasized the significance of this agreement as the corporation proceeds with a “multi-year transformation to achieve financial resilience and better address the contemporary needs of the nation.”

In its first-quarter results, Canada Post reported a loss of $205 million in the initial three months of this year, further highlighting its ongoing challenges in competing with private courier services. The corporation has implemented cost-cutting strategies, including the elimination of door-to-door delivery, a move opposed by the union.
