RCMP authorities in Whitehorse have pressed charges against a woman for multiple driving violations related to a crash from last spring that caused severe injuries to a Para cyclist. Ashley Kirkpatrick, 39, also recognized as Ashley Godin, is facing accusations of driving recklessly, operating a vehicle without a valid license, and driving an unregistered vehicle.
The incident occurred during the late hours of June 7 on the Alaska Highway, located south of downtown Whitehorse. Darryl Tait, a prominent local athlete and advocate for accessibility, was on his hand-cycle preparing for the upcoming Canada Summer Games when a passing vehicle struck him from behind. RCMP reported that Tait was pulled along by the vehicle for a distance.
Following the collision, Tait spoke to CBC News in June and revealed sustaining injuries including broken ribs and vertebrae, as well as difficulty moving one of his arms. He was hospitalized in Whitehorse at the time. Tait had previously experienced a snowmobile accident in 2009 that resulted in paralysis from the chest down before transitioning into a successful Para athlete and a vocal supporter for individuals with disabilities or mobility limitations.
Kirkpatrick is set to make a court appearance in Whitehorse on December 2.
