“Close Encounter: Wildlife Enthusiast Meets Black Bear in Calgary Park”

Share

Wildlife enthusiast Mike Reece had an unexpected encounter with a black bear during his photography expedition at Fish Creek Provincial Park in Calgary. Reece described the startling moment when he found himself just four feet away from the bear, which promptly dashed towards the river upon noticing him.

Reece, who had initially set out to capture owl images, later stumbled upon the same bear near a beaver dam. The bear was seen feasting on cattails while the beavers in the vicinity appeared distressed by the unusual visitor.

Following the encounter, Reece emphasized the need to carry bear spray for future visits to Fish Creek. Alberta Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Services disclosed multiple sightings of the juvenile black bear in the park since June 16. Despite the sightings, there have been no reports of aggressive behavior from the bear.

Calgary’s southwest region, including Fish Creek, is a common habitat for bears due to the abundant food sources available. Expert Sara Jordan-McLachlan explained that bears frequent the area, attracted by the ample berry bushes and other food options. The city does not monitor bear sightings directly but mentions specific neighborhoods, such as Oakridge and Discovery Ridge, as bear-prone areas.

While it is unlikely for bears to be aggressive towards humans, caution is advised. Jordan-McLachlan highlighted the importance of staying on designated trails and not approaching bears to prevent potential defensive reactions. Seeking out bears can make them feel cornered, leading to possible aggressive encounters.

It is crucial for visitors to remain bear-aware and allow the animals their space in the natural environment. Vigilance and respect for wildlife are key to ensuring safe coexistence with these creatures in their habitat.
