The trial of a man accused of the nearly two-decade-old murder of 19-year-old Misha Pavelick has commenced, with the jury being presented with the Crown’s case. Crown prosecutor Adam Breker outlined the events of the fateful night at Kinookimaw campground near Regina Beach in 2006, describing it as tumultuous.

The accused, now 36 years old but protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act due to being a minor at the time of the incident, faces a charge of second-degree murder and has entered a plea of not guilty. The Crown intends to pursue an adult sentence if he is convicted.

During the trial, the jury will hear testimonies from numerous witnesses who were present on the night of Pavelick’s death. Breker highlighted that Pavelick was involved in altercations following the arrival of an unwelcome group, which included his ex-girlfriend and her new partner. After a series of confrontations, the accused allegedly fatally stabbed Pavelick in the heart when the uninvited group returned armed with knives.

While no witnesses are expected to have directly witnessed the stabbing, Breker expressed confidence that the evidence to be presented will establish the accused’s culpability beyond a reasonable doubt. He emphasized the prosecution’s belief that by the trial’s conclusion, the jury will be convinced of the accused’s guilt and intent.

The murder case, which remained unsolved for years, saw a breakthrough in 2021 leading to the arrest of the accused in 2023. Defence lawyer Andrew Hitchcock indicated plans to challenge the coherence of the Crown’s case during the trial.

Following the selection of jurors and alternates, the trial presided over by Justice Catherine Dawson is set to span four weeks. The Crown is set to call upon 47 witnesses, including over two dozen individuals who were present at the campground party where Pavelick lost his life.
