Novak Djokovic has decided to part ways with the Professional Tennis Players Association (PTPA), a group he co-founded and which initiated legal action against the governing bodies of the sport last year. In a social media post on Sunday, Djokovic expressed that his values and approach no longer align with the current direction of the organization.
The 24-time Grand Slam champion, along with former Canadian player Vasek Pospisil, unveiled the PTPA during the 2020 U.S. Open with the aim of providing representation for independent contractors in the individual-focused sport of tennis. While the vision included evolving into a comprehensive union capable of negotiating collective bargaining agreements akin to team sports, such progress has not materialized.
Citing concerns over transparency, governance, and the representation of his voice and image, Djokovic highlighted his decision to distance himself from the PTPA. The association had previously filed a class-action lawsuit in March against various tennis bodies, including the men’s and women’s tours, the International Tennis Federation, and the sport’s integrity agency, alleging systemic mistreatment, anti-competitive behavior, and a lack of consideration for player welfare. Subsequently, the four Grand Slam events were also named as defendants in the lawsuit.
While Djokovic was not named as a plaintiff in the legal action, he emphasized in March his desire for other players to take a stand. The lawsuit aimed at granting players increased access to earnings, arguing that the current system restricts prize money and limits opportunities for players to earn income off the court.
In his recent statement, Djokovic indicated his intention to refocus on his tennis career, family, and contribute to the sport in ways that align with his values and integrity. He extended his best wishes to the players and stakeholders involved in the PTPA’s future endeavors, signifying the closure of this chapter for him.
