“Eurovision Director Considering Canada’s Entry”

Eurovision director Martin Green mentioned in an interview with the BBC that Canada could potentially participate in the renowned song competition, although no formal request or decision has been made yet. Addressing speculations surrounding Prime Minister Mark Carney’s interest in Canada joining Eurovision, Green acknowledged being aware of such rumors.

“We understand that Mark Carney is looking to embrace Europe,” Green stated. “While I haven’t received any specific proposals, I want to emphasize that we are inclusive. Our doors have been open for 70 years, welcoming anyone who aligns with the values of this extraordinary event and wishes to grace our stage alongside friends.”

The Eurovision Song Contest, known for showcasing original songs from various countries, is overseen by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). While full participation traditionally requires broadcasters to be EBU full members, the competition has recently allowed a few non-European or associate-member participants, notably Australia, under special arrangements.

CBC/Radio-Canada holds associate membership in the EBU since 1950. Despite this status, Leon Mar, the broadcaster’s senior director of public affairs, clarified that associate membership does not automatically grant eligibility to compete in Eurovision. Mar emphasized that participation in the contest is reserved for public broadcasters who are full EBU members.

CBC/Radio-Canada is actively engaged with the EBU, with three staff members attending the Eurovision Song Contest as observers. The broadcaster is exploring closer collaboration with the EBU through initiatives such as the Eurovision News Exchange and the Euroradio Music Exchange. Mar highlighted CBC/Radio-Canada’s editorial independence as a federal Crown corporation operating independently from the government, protected under the Broadcasting Act.

The notion of Canada joining Eurovision was briefly discussed in last year’s federal budget, with the government working alongside CBC/Radio-Canada to explore potential participation. While Australia participates in Eurovision despite not being in the EBU’s geographic area, Mar suggested contacting the EBU directly for further details.

As of now, there is no formal application or timeline for Canada’s potential participation in Eurovision. Green’s remarks indicate a possibility for Canada’s future involvement, stressing that any entry would necessitate EBU approval and likely a formal proposal. The Eurovision Song Contest 2026 is ongoing, with the final scheduled for Saturday following the second round of semi-finals on Thursday.
