A fatal shooting in Wasagamack Anisininew Nation, Manitoba has left a 37-year-old man dead and led to the arrest of a suspect, according to the RCMP. The incident occurred early Friday morning when gunshots were reported, and the victim was found deceased outside a residence in the First Nation community.
Alex McDougall, serving as the acting grand chief of Anisininew Okimawin, a coalition representing Wasagamack and three other First Nations in the Island Lake Region, expressed deep concern over the unprecedented crisis unfolding in their community. The tragic event has prompted the need for extensive support to assist both the community and the affected family members.
Following the shooting, Wasagamack, located approximately 470 kilometers northeast of Winnipeg in the Island Lake region, was placed on lockdown with schools and public facilities shuttered as authorities launched a search for the suspect. A male individual was apprehended, though details regarding his age and potential charges were not disclosed by the police.
The RCMP major crime services unit is currently investigating the death as a homicide, as confirmed by the Mounties.
