“Fjord” by Cristian Mungiu Wins Palme d’Or at Cannes

Cristian Mungiu’s latest drama, Fjord, set in Norway and focusing on political divisions, has clinched the prestigious Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. This marks Mungiu’s second Palme d’Or win, following his acclaimed film 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days.

Amid a relatively subdued 79th Cannes Film Festival, Fjord stood out for its compelling narrative exploring what Mungiu termed as “left-wing fundamentalism.” The film follows Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve portraying Romanian evangelicals who relocate to Norway, only to face their children being taken by child services due to disciplinary actions.

Mungiu expressed, “Today, society is deeply divided and radicalized.” He emphasized that the movie serves as a counter to all forms of fundamentalism, advocating for concepts like trauma, inclusion, and empathy to be practiced more extensively.

With this victory, Mungiu joins an elite group of filmmakers who have won the Palme d’Or twice. His earlier work, 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days, focusing on abortion in Romania, secured the award in 2007.

The success of Fjord continues the remarkable streak for Neon, the specialty distributor, which has now claimed seven consecutive Palme d’Or winners. Fjord adds to this winning streak, following last year’s champion, Jafar Panahi’s It Was Just an Accident, and the 2024 winner, Anora, which went on to win the coveted best picture award at the Oscars.
