For the first time in Olympic history, the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Games will feature speed skating on a temporary indoor rink. Since the end of October, Messer has been meticulously building the speed skating ice at the new Speed Skating Stadium in Rho, just north of Milan. Describing this task as one of his most challenging yet, Messer emphasized the importance of achieving the perfect ice surface for the skaters.
In comparison to other types of ice, such as hockey, figure skating, and curling, speed skating ice must strike a balance between hardness, coldness, and cleanliness to provide the ideal conditions for maximum speed and performance. Any imperfections on the ice surface, like dirt or impurities, can significantly impact a skater’s speed due to the sharpness of their blades.
Former Olympic gold medalist Enrico Fabris, now serving as the deputy sports manager at the speed skating venue in Rho, emphasized the significance of uniform and fast ice for all competitors, highlighting the enjoyment and advantages of skating on well-prepared ice.
Challenges in Ice Preparation
Before the ice-making process began in Italy, extensive preparations were made to ensure a level surface and a network of pipes capable of maintaining the ice at the required temperatures. Water purification is crucial during ice formation to maintain the right balance of impurities for optimal ice quality.
Messer and his team meticulously apply thin layers of water to build up the ice surface, painting it white and marking lanes for the skaters. Maintaining a clean surface free from dirt, dust, or frost is essential to minimize friction and ensure smooth gliding for the athletes. The Zamboni ice resurfacing machine plays a vital role in keeping the track clean and providing a fresh surface for the skaters.
Adjusting ice thickness, monitoring freezing speed, and preventing any shifts in the ice or infrastructure due to the Zamboni’s weight are ongoing challenges faced during the ice preparation process.
Testing and Adjustments
The speed skating rink underwent its first major test during a junior World Cup event, where initial feedback suggested minor adjustments were needed to fine-tune the ice conditions. With a limited timeframe for learning and adapting, Messer and his team are focused on optimizing air temperature, humidity, and ice quality for the upcoming Olympic events. The final test will be on Jan. 31, when Olympians will hit the ice for their training sessions.
