An iconic general store in Prince Edward Island is transitioning to new ownership after being operated by the same family for over 80 years. Clow’s Red and White in Hampshire offers a diverse range of products, but it’s particularly renowned for its meat pies, which have become a cherished holiday tradition for many Islanders.
Throughout its eight-decade history, the store has attracted loyal customers who return for its homemade beef jerky and peameal bacon. Originally established in the 1940s by Judd Clow’s uncle, the store has been a cornerstone of the community. Norman Clow, who has managed the store since 2015, reflects on his family’s legacy and the store’s evolution over the years through displayed photographs and paintings adorning the walls.
Having grown up in the store, Clow reminisces about his journey from assisting his father to eventually becoming the butcher and expanding the store’s offerings. As the store transitions to new ownership, Clow assures customers that they can expect continuity in the products and services, with plans to retain the existing staff and maintain the signature items like meat pies, potted meat, and beef jerky.
The new owners, Dwijesh Patel and Krunal Patel, are committed to preserving the store’s heritage and upholding its reputation within the community. Dwijesh Patel emphasizes the importance of maintaining quality and fostering connections with customers, echoing the sentiment of continued community engagement expressed by Krunal Patel.
Clow acknowledges his mixed emotions about the change but expresses confidence in the new owners to carry on the store’s legacy. As the transition unfolds, customers can rest assured that the holiday tradition of securing meat pies will proceed as usual, with preparations for Christmas orders commencing soon. Clow intends to support the new owners during their initial Christmas season before taking a well-deserved break.
To the patrons he has served over the years, Clow extends his gratitude and hopes for ongoing connections beyond his tenure at the store, emphasizing the relationships he has built with the community members over time.
